A hand decorated Battle of Hastings chess piece set and a 50cm high quality wooden chess board.
In 1066 the Normans fought the English in a battle 6 miles outside of Hastings. The Normans led by Duke William of Normandy, defeated King Harold II and his English army and gained control of England. High on a fresh victory against a Norwegian Viking invasion, King Harold ignored advice to recoup and gather extra forces.
But it wasn't just that they had less men; an estimated 7,500 against a circa 8,000 plus Norman force, but they were primarily infantry carrying battleaxes and swords while the Normans had a variety of attacking options with the best Cavalry in Europe, the now infamous archers and crossbowmen, as well as infantry.
The English pawns are infantry with battleaxes, while the Normans are chain mail clad archers. King Harold is accompanied by Queen Edith, the daughter of the Earl of Mercia and the widow of the Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. William the Duke of Normandy, better known as William the Conqueror and from 1066 King William I of England, is accompanied by Maltida of Flanders, later Queen Consort of England.
